A whole new kind of Tesla experience
If you’ve ever dreamed about owning a Tesla, but shuddered at the price tag, you might be interested to know that come spring 2016, you can buy one for $500.
Seriously?
Unfortunately, no.
I mean, you can buy one, sure, but you won’t be able to drive it. In fact, no one with a valid driver’s license can. Because it’s not exactly street legal. And it’s not exactly a real car.
Behold! A pint-sized Tesla Model S for kids.
That you heard right. If you’re the proud parent of a 3-to-8-year-old child, you can now be the proud owner-by-proxy of a Tesla toy car (or you could be the really rad aunt/uncle/friend etc. that said child will love forever and ever… at least until they outgrow it)
Radio Flyer posted a video on its Youtube channel Tuesday (Feb 16) about their upcoming product. It is currently available for preorder and expected shipment is in May (you can watch it here).
You might recognize Radio Flyer as the name behind the infamous red toy wagon. The company, which was founded nearly a century ago in Chicago, Illinois, continues to also produce scooter, tricycles, bicycles, horses, and ride-ons for children.
But back to the tiny Tesla—
This isn’t just some off-the-rack toy car for your child.
The car is available in 3 authentic Tesla Model S colors: Red Multi-Coat, Deep Blue Metallic, and Midnight Silver Metallic. Black Turbine Wheels are standard, but for $15 you can upgrade your child’s ride with some flashy Silver Turbine Wheels.
Other optional accessories that are available include an indoor car cover to “recreate the ultimate Tesla experience” ($50), a customized license plate with up to 8 characters ($15), and a customizable parking sign up to 10 characters ($25).
What makes this car go go go for the little ones? Extra special batteries with Lithium Ion Technology. According to Radio Flyer, these “Flight Speed™ Lithium Ion Batteries are engineered to provide the best performance available in a battery powered ride-on with a lower impact on the environment.” A 130 Wh standard battery is included with each vehicle purchased, but an optional 190 Wh premium battery is available for an extra $50. This extra fifty bucks is supposed to provide 50% more playtime for charge. You can also purchase extra batteries if you’re into that.
So the base price of the car is $499. But all the little extras add up if you choose them (and you might think, why not? I love my kid.) If you choose every upgrade, though, and every accessory, it gets a little bit scary:
$804? Yikes.
Radio Flyer’s Tesla toy is certainly not entirely unfamiliar to the market—Power Wheels® have been around for thirty years—but they’re certainly bringing in a level of sophistication and low-impact environmental awareness to neighborhoods everywhere. With fully operational headlights, a built-in sound system, and an authentic Tesla “frunk” (front trunk), this little car certainly is electric.
You might think that $800 is a lot for a preschooler’s toy, but totally reasonable for an adult form of transportation. However, you probably shouldn’t invest in one with the hopes of driving yourself to work on the cheap—unfortunately, these one-seater battery-operated vehicles have a maximum weight allowance of 81lbs.
Want to get your hands on one of these Tesla toy cars? They’re only available for purchase through Radio Flyer’s website.
